In December, 1961, Mr. Joseph Woodruff, then President of the Middletown Board of Education, established an annual award for teachers, in memory of his sister, Virginia W. Shaffer. Mrs. Shaffer had been a teacher in the local school system at the time of her death in 1961.The award, to be given in recognition of service to the teaching profession, is administered by the Middletown Teachers Association. Selection is by the Virginia Shaffer Committee from nominations by members.The following criteria should be considered in making your nomination:

  1. The recipient should have a minimum of five years active engagement in the United Teaching Profession.

  2. The recipient should have participated in such services as OEA and NEA activities, curriculum studies, promotion of legislation, or other activities contributing to general teacher welfare and morale.

  3. President and officers serving MTA would not be eligible for this award for at least a year and a half after their term of office has expired.
